I was checking my email this morning, and as usual I had a list of chain emails forwarded to me from my mom. I love her so much but for the life of me I cannot get her to fact check these emails before she forwards them to her family and friends.
I did something that I normally would not do, after fact checking and rebutting all the misinformation in the email, instead of just forwarding this correction to just her, I sent it to everyone in this email, rough estimate of 30 to 60 people (I am going to catch hell from my mom when she finds out…LOL). Below is the original email and then my corrections. Just wanted to share.
MEDICARE DEDUCTION INCREASE
For those of you who are on Medicare, read the article below.
It is about the monthly amount of money you are going to pay into Medicare in 2011, 2012 and the huge increase you will pay in 2013. It’s a short important article: You will pay it.
Congress will not allow an increase in the social security COLA (cost of living adjustment). However, the per person monthly Medicare insurance premium will be increased from the 2009 premium of $96.40 to $104.20 in 2010, $120.20 for the year 2011 AND Yearly increases to a wonderful $247.00 in 2014. Thank You Obamacare!
Congress also gave themselves a $3,000 a month Cost of Living Adjustment!
Send this to all seniors that you know.
Here is my revision email. These people hold their faith very close to them, therefore, I used bible verses to get my point across. Let me know what you think (did I cross the line).
Proverbs 19:5 — A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will not escape.
Exodus 20:16 — “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
Proverbs 19:9 — A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will perish.
There were 2 points raised in this chain email and both are not true.
1. Medicare Increase:
From a govt, nonpartisan FAQ check (the site https://questions.medicare.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/2307/session/L2F2LzEvc2lkLzg5bWMzKnRr
If you are individual making less than $85,000/year or couple making less than $170,000/year: NO INCREASE.
Will my Medicare Part B premium increase in 2011?
Most Medicare beneficiaries will continue to pay the same $96.40 or $110.50 Part B premium amount in 2011. Beneficiaries who currently have the Social Security Administration (SSA) withhold their Part B premium and have incomes of $85,000 or less (or $170,000 or less for joint filers) will not have an increase in their Part B premium for 2011.
FYI – nothing to do with “OBAMACARE.” Also if you consider yourself Christian and are a person who comes out against healthcare reform which will make sure every person has access to doctors/hospitals, remember this.
Matthew 10:8 —Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay.
Deuteronomy 15:11 — For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’
2. Cost of living increase pay raise for:
Not true/false. From Congressional Reform ACT of 2011, passed by Democratic Congress under Nancy Pelosi http://bit.ly/gfHv35
Congressional representatives have been voting themselves cost of living pay raises- Fiction!
Cost of living salary increases for congressional members have been automatically generated in the past, but some members have been known to voluntarily opt out of it. Members of Congress have not gotten a raise in pay in the last 2 years while the US has been facing hard economic times. Also, the 111th Congress, under the leadership of Nancy Pelosi, voted to stop the automatic pay raise for the last two consecutive years. President Obama signed the last bill into law on May 14, 2010, which will affect congressional pay raises in 2011, according to a May 14th article by the congressional newspaper, The Hill. The article also said, “The base pay for House and Senate lawmakers is $174,000, though leaders earn a higher salary. The cost-of-living increase would have given lawmakers a $1,600 raise in 2011. By rescinding the increase, lawmakers saved taxpayers $850,000 for next year.”
In Democrat controlled Congress in 2010: http://www.factcheck.org/2010/01/retribution-fabrication/
Q: Did Congress raise its own pay for 2010 while voting to deny an increase for Social Security recipients?
A: No. A chain e-mail calling for “retribution” in the fall elections makes false claims and uses fabricated figures.
Please….before you forward these emails, take the time and check to make sure what you are passing to your family and friends is actually true. By spreading these false statements, you are hurting the very people you claim to want to help.
